repositories of research data (i.e., the data servers behind actual publications) are listed on the global registry ‘re3data’. It is the biggest of its kind in the world. It has been used for over ten years by researchers, funding organisations and libraries to search for and identify suitable repositories, and has now itself been the subject of an article in the journal Nature. Its authors are united in their conclusion that four basic principles ensure the quality of the repository: Openness, community engagement, high-quality metadata, and its ongoing consideration of users’ needs.
