ETH researchers have produced handy-sized magnets of seven and twelve tesla in strength from a tape coated with superconducting material. The trick to them lies in their narrow winding diameter. This makes producing these magnets – and improving them – much easier than is the case with large magnets. These mini-magnets are potentially useful for benchtop devices for projects in structural biology, medicine and materials science.
